Quick Tips from a Minimalist Kitchen

Quick Tips from a Minimalist Kitchen | easyhomemade.net

Five-and-a-half years ago, my kitchen cabinets were overflowing with cooking gadgets. In fact, my laundry room was overflowing with them as well. And there were probably a few in storage too.

I have always loved kitchen stuff, and even in high school I would ask for gadgets and small appliances as gifts. Before our wedding, I was given a Pampered Chef bridal shower and later became a Pampered Chef consultant (which is laughable considering my proficiency — or lack thereof — in the kitchen at that time), and I had an abundance of gadgets and gizmos which I’d carted back and forth across the country.

As we were packing up to move to our current home (our fourth move in five years), I suddenly realized that no amount of organizing could solve the issue of clutter caused by too much stuff, and — at 7 months pregnant — I began hauling load after load of stuff to Salvation Army, giving away almost as much as I packed up for our new home.

Despite the amount I gave away, I still clung to many of my favorite (if seldom used) kitchen gadgets, and it has taken five more years of decluttering to get to the point where I can confidently say that I regularly use every item in my kitchen.

I’ve had a few regrets along the way (there are still times I wish I’d kept the springform pan, although I can’t say how much I would actually use it!), but for the most part I’ve learned to use the basics in a variety of ways without the need for specialty gadgets, and I love having uncluttered kitchen cabinets.

Over the next few months, I’ll be sharing a variety of tips from my kitchen — things like I how I make do without a garlic press, egg separator or double boiler. At some point I’ll share an inventory of the cooking tools I do have and see which ones you think I could still declutter. I hope you’ll join me!

In the meantime, here are a few questions to ask yourself as you look at the gadgets and gizmos in your kitchen:

How often do you use it? If you’re only pulling something out once every six months, chances are you could live without it. The exception to this would be something like a canner that you only pull out every six months but use extensively for a week or two before packing it away again.

Could you do the same thing without the appliance? I had a quesadilla maker for a long time that I rarely used, and I decided to let it go before our move. When my dad came to meet our newborn daughter just weeks later, he brought quesadilla fixins, expecting to use the quesadilla maker. Oops. Instead, he taught me how to make them on a pan, and I’ve never looked back.

Do you have more than one appliance or gizmo that serve the same function? For example, there’s really no reason you need a blender and a smoothie maker. A smoothie maker is a blender with an added spout on the front for easy pouring, so go ahead and give away the regular blender.

Are you holding on to it because you love it or because you’re afraid you’ll miss it? Yes, chances are that — like me — you will regret at least one decision as you go through this decluttering process. But don’t hold on to things just because you’re afraid you’ll miss them! And if that’s the thing holding you back, pack up the extras and store them in the basement for a while before giving them away, just to make sure.

Would I use it more if it was stored in a different place? I think this is an important question to ask yourself because chances are there is at least one thing in your kitchen that you think about using all the time but rarely feel like pulling out. If you think convenience or location is the problem, try a new home before you declutter it, but be willing to get rid of it if you’re still not using it after the change!

What’s the one kitchen gadget you couldn’t live without?

I love all 7 of my silicone spatulas, my garlic turn and crush, and my immersion blender/chopper.

A kindred spirit. I love gadgets! Alton Brown taught me the value of never buying single function tools, so it’s gotten somewhat better, but clutter still abides.
Does the crock pot count as a gadget, or do you mean things like avocado peelers?

I could get rid of my bread maker. when I do use it, it causes me more stress than it is worth and therefore I don’t use it often! That is just for starters!

Great Idea. I have recently taken my kitchen outfitting back to the “foundation”. Cooking and baking with the basics is minimalist and functional. I have a few exceptions like my grapefruit knife. I eat grapefruit seasonally and I should explore eating it the way it was done before the invention of the grapefruit knife.
I look forward to your future posts on this.

One gadget? I don’t think I can list just one. But my crockpot and immersion blender are at the top of the list. I love my Kitchen aid, but I can mix dough by hand and whip cream with my immersion blender, so I don’t NEED it. I could live without the Oster blender and use my immersion blender more. The crockpot sure comes in handy when we’ll be out for hours and need dinner ready when we return. Or doing a chuck roast or rotisserie chicken. Yes, I could use the oven, but it heats up the kitchen too much. Please don’t make me pick just one!

I loved this! My hubby and I differ on what type of gadgets need to be kept – he likes to keep, I would rather simplify! Finding things is key and if I have to search extra to find a special slicer or dicer and could have already chopped the food I am doing, then I do not see the need! I do love my PC Food Chopper – will keep that forever!

I gasped when I read how you got rid of your garlic press! I use mine almost every day! I couldn’t imagine getting rid of it or my chopper. Could I do them manually with a knife, yes, but it is easier and faster with those two items. I would probably skip the onions and garlic in my recipes if I had to cut them up manually. Now, cookie cutters and other things… I could get rid of!

I love my blender. I use it and/or the food processor that fits into the same stand every week at least once.

I have a few as it is hard to pick just one. I love my potato masher, blender, Pampered Chef chopper, my Pampered Chef spatulas, vegetable peeler, and a few Henkel(not sure of the spelling) knives as well as two Pampered Chef cutting boards. I know I have more but the list would keep going :)

Have a beautiful day!

I was just talking about this with friends today. We actually do have a quesadilla maker, and we use it all the time! We had gotten a nice waffle maker as a wedding gift, but we decided to keep the panini/waffle maker instead since it does 2 things and we use it often, even if our waffles don’t turn out to the best since you can flip them to cook more evenly. :p Besides the griddle and our KitchenAid mixer we don’t have many other gadgets. I’ve put our microwave in a less noticeable spot because I don’t use it anymore, but whenever my in-laws come over, they use it quite a bit. I’m sure we can even do without these items too. I couldn’t live without our immersion blender.

Gadget I can’t live without? Not sure that are classified as a gadget, but my knife set. After 20 years of marriage I finally have a nice set, that is sharp. You can do a lot with the right knife.

BTW -I have two springform pans I would be happy to send you. I have NEVER used them. They are just in my cabinet, in case. :)

My flat whisk and saucier pan! I never thought I needed more than just the “standard” whisk but I was wrong. My flat whisk and saucier are hard at work at least once a week (if not 2 or 3 or more!) making white sauce, gravy, or thickening up crockpot juices into a yummy sauce. And I love my Chef’s knife. I’d really like another one and a slightly smaller version, too! But along the lines of decluttering, I tossed out my bread maker years ago and all my yucky hodge-podge pans for hard working stainless steel pots and aluminum sheet pan workhorses.

If the slow cooker counts as a gadget that would be the one thing I had to keep. I use it 1-2 times a week and there is nothing to replace it. My other choice (if slow cooker is a necessity and, therefore, not a gadget) would be my set of four cutting boards. They are different colors for vegetables, chicken, meat and fish. I love them because I can’t stand the thought of chicken being cut on the same board as carrots or potatoes. Of course, they are washed thoroughly after each use, but it is a psychological thing I just can’t get rid of. With a Sharpie, I wrote on each board what it is to be used for so everyone in the house knows not to use the yellow board for vegetables!
